Synchronic and Diachronic Research of Phonological, Lexical, and Grammatical System of the Lithuanian Language. Assoc. Prof. Dr V. Zubaitienė. 2023–2026. The aim is to investigate phonetics, lexis, semantics, and grammar of the Lithuanian language, its systematic variability, variation and interaction, the relation of Lithuanian vocabulary and grammar to usage, and the differences between spoken and written Lithuanian.

Lithuanian Particles and Discourse Structure from a Synchronic and Diachronic Perspective. (S-MIP-21-18). Assoc. Prof. Dr E. JasionytÄ—-MikuÄionienÄ—. Participants: Assoc. Prof. Dr A. Ruskan, Assoc. Prof. Dr A. Å olienÄ—. 2021–2024. The project aims to provide a thorough synchronic and diachronic account of Lithuanian particles belonging to different semantic classes. It focuses on the role of particles in discourse structure, establishes the connection between particles and different units of discourse, and examines the formation and development of particles within the processes of (inter)subjectification and lexicalisation, as well as specifying the status of particles in Lithuanian grammar based on a unifying methodology and new theoretical frameworks. The study combines qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis.

The aim of the project is to investigate the frequency, structure, lexical environment, and multifunctionality of linking words in various Lithuanian scientific texts, identifying their logical semantic groups, as well as through comparison with their English and German counterparts.

The project aims to ascertain to what extent the meanings of words from other languages have changed in the Lithuanian context and what Lithuanians include in the concepts of DEMOCRACY, PATRIOTISM, and TOLERANCE. The research allows us to understand what a nation lives by, what it adopts as new and makes its own, what it rejects, and what it ignores.

The project aims at the analysis of language/dialect usage, language attitudes, language acquisition, language learning and teaching, language policy, the language of the diaspora, the sociolinguistic situation in Lithuania, socially significant changes in the use of Lithuanian and local vernaculars, and evolving levels of multilingualism. This project aims to address the language preparation needs of preschool children from migrant families, providing parents with tools to foster their children’s language competence and readiness for school. As part of the project, a comprehensive platform will be developed, serving as a central hub for parents and teachers. This platform will focus on promoting multilingualism and fostering intercultural learning. Additionally, an e-learning app will be created, featuring modules that target vocabulary and language preparation for school. The app will be accessible in four languages - German, Lithuanian, Polish, and Slovenian.
Spoken Easy Language for Social Inclusion (2022-1-SI01-KA220-ADU-000087852 ).
J. Bružaitė-Liseckienė (2022–2024)
This project aims to empower members of society with diverse needs and promote inclusion in society. The main objective of the project is to develop methodological tools for the use of spoken language that is easy to understand. Spoken, easy-to-understand language is important for people with fewer opportunities, in particular people with cognitive and similar disabilities, immigrants (e.g. war refugees). The project will first assess the needs and resources available in the partner countries for spoken accessible language. Based on this assessment of needs and resources, recommendations for spoken intelligible language will be developed. The recommendations will be tested in the three project partner countries. Based on the feedback from the testing of the guidelines, an online methodological tool for learning to communicate in spoken, easy-to-understand language will be developed in all languages of the partner countries.

The Project aims at investigating numerous lexical aspects of languages: the meaning of a word and a phrase, phraseology and collocations, lexicographic problems, lexical, semantic and pragmatic aspects of different discourses (legal, academic, public and mass media, humour, learner, etc.) in one language or across several languages.
The task for 2023 focused on the following: 1) metaphoricity in different types of discourse, mainly political, media and multimodal discourse; 2) irony in public discourse from a cross-cultural perspective; 3) stance from a cross-cultural perspective in legal discourse; 4) collocations and lexical bundles in learner language; 5) discourse strategies of non-native speakers; 6) native language vocabulary of emigrants; 7) space from a cognitive point of view.

The department (in cooperation with the departments of French and German Philology as well as the Centre for Scandinavian Studies) has been carrying out investigations of literary trends, genres and problems of poetics, the development of literary traditions, the relationship of literary texts with Philosophy, Aesthetics, Psychology, Sociology, and other theoretical systems. Some of the academic staff have been continually doing research in the field of the history of Germanic works of literature and literature in Romance languages and publishing articles on related issues.

The linguists of the department carry out this research in close collaboration with their colleagues based at the Department of Italian linguistics and literature, the Department of French Philology, and the Department of the Lithuanian Language. The focus of the research in 2023 was on the synchronic and diachronic analysis of language-specific features characteristic of the grammatical, lexical, and semantic structure of the languages under study. The range of research methods used and theoretical approaches followed varies greatly: from purely descriptive to functional, from cognitive to sociolinguistic, and from quantitative to qualitative analyses of authentic language data.

The project aims to explore, prepare, and publish lecture notes of the Biblical teaching delivered by Konstantinas Sirvydas. These lecture notes, taken by Sirvydas’ student, Adam Pęski, in Vilnius in 1620, are a seventeenth-century monument of religious writing, which makes up an important part of the heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as well as an original piece of writing within the context of all Europe. MotherNet is a small consortium consisting of three universities, ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒ (Lithuania), Uppsala University (Sweden) and the National University of Ireland Maynooth. International Research Projects
Lithuanian Academic Scheme for International Cooperation in Baltic Studies. EU Structural Funds. Project leader: Dr G. KavaliÅ«naitÄ—-Holvoet. 2017–2023. Certain project activities requiring staff mobility were affected by the pandemic and were organised remotely. The main activities, namely, long-term teaching of Lithuanian subjects at the centres of Baltic studies abroad, one-term studies of foreign undergraduates at ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒ, student practices at our partner institution Vytautas Magnus University, were continued; the two-week Lithuanian summer school at the Humboldt University in Berlin took place.
Baltic Bridges. Ministry of Education, Research and Sports of Lithuania. Assist. Prof. Dr A. Navickaitė-Klišauskienė. 2023. Bridges in the Baltics is an annual student conference organized by University of Tartu together with other universities in the Baltic Sea region. The aim of the conference is to bring together students whose studies and research focus are on the languages or culture of the three Baltic States, to give them the possibility to meet their peers from other countries and universities, to present their academic work and interests, learn from each other and make new contacts.
Optimisation of the Activity of the Lithuanian Department of the First Baltic Centre in India and Lecturership of Lithuanian Language and Culture II. Ministry of Education, Research and Sports of Lithuania. Dr G. Kavaliūnaitė-Holvoet. 2023. The principal aim of the project is to support the activities of the Center of Cultural Studies for the Baltic Region at Dev Sanskriti Vishwawilaya University in Haridvar, India, by strengthening its Lithuanian section. The long-term Lithuanian language lecturership was financed this year from the Baltic studies project.
Strengthening the Educational Activities of the Lithuanian Studies Center of the University of Latvia. Ministry of Education, Research and Sports of Lithuania. Assist. Prof. Dr E. Kazakėnaitė. 2023. The aim of this project is to uphold the Lithuanian Studies Center of the University of Latvia by supplementing its library with new books and to promote students’ interest in Lithuanian language by organizing social event Lithuanian Language Day.
Towards Lithuania. Ministry of Education, Research and Sports of Lithuania. Prof. Dr D. SinkeviÄiÅ«tÄ—. 2023. The aim of the project is to establish a cooperative scholarly network between the University of Cracow and ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒ. In 2023, three lectures were organised where scholars from ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒ taught a given topic to Cracow students of Lithuanian and Cracow colleagues interested in the Lithuanian language and culture.

Lithuanian Literature and Intercultural Research. Principal Investigator – prof. Dr B. SpeiÄytÄ—. 2023–2026.
All staff members were involved in this project. They did research in contemporary, modern and early modern Lithuanian literature, issued volume 65(1) of the academic journal Literatūra [Literature]; delivered 10 presentations at national and international conferences in Lithuania and abroad, and gave 10 talks in academic seminars and dicussions and moderated, were invited as speakers in 31 literature events all over Lithuania, gave 5 lectures and seminars on Lithuanian literature for pupils and teachers.

The aim of this project is to systematically investigate the effects of censorship on translation of foreign literature in Soviet Lithuania (1940–1990). During 2023, the researchers gave 2 talks in conferences, published 2 articles on translation censorship, interviewed translation scholars and were working on the book to deliver the findings of the research project.

Development and implementation of a digital platform for the promotion of access to mental healthcare for low language proficient third-country nationals in Europe — MHEALTH4ALL. Development of methodological framework in contemporary theory of literature, art studies, philosophy and semiotics. Aspectual analysis of literary texts and other types of discourses. The academic staff of A. J. Greimas Centre carried out research in semiotics, textual scholarship and intermediality. The goal of this project is to study literary, egodocumentary, and media texts and literary field in a comparative, interdisciplinary and intercultural perspective focusing on female identity and urban literary studies. In 2023, the group continued work expanding their field of research in Spanish, Lithuanian and East and Central European literature, participated in conferences, carried out project work and were active in research dissemination.

Women’s City in Contemporary Lithuanian Literature: places, territories, identities. Research Council of Lithuania. Research funding measure – Researcher Group project, (2023-2026). Coordinator and researcher: Assoc. Prof. I. Vidugirytė-Pakerienė. Participant: Prof. G. Beconytė (cartography).
The project aims to explore the significance of the city as a geographical, social and architectural space in articulating the issues of identity and subjectivity in contemporary Lithuanian women's literature, and to research the urban aspects of women's creative work. This year project activities included collecting research data, presentations at the conference „The Urban Cultural Space: Baltic Narratives“ and academic summer school „Islands of Literature“, and two traineeships at Utrecht University and Trinity College (Dublin).
